Short Description: ‘Digital Dilemmas: AI and the Invisible Biases’ is a traveling exhibit, designed to raise awareness, inform individuals about the pervasive nature of AI (bias) and invite people to share their opinion on the matter. By showcasing real-world examples of AI applications and related errors, it provides an introduction to AI functions, including its inherent biases. The exhibition features engaging elements designed to encourage active participation and provoke thoughtful discussions: a series of posters and a mini-podcast educate the public, while a physical neural net and a bulletin board give space for interactivity, reflection and discussion.

Materials

Handout flyers – contains pdf’s of the english and dutch flyers with additional information that visitors could take with them.

A5 handout flyer ENG

Additional print material – contains (1) an introductory poster that was printed two sided (one side english, one side dutch) and placed in a poster stand at the entrance of the exhibit (2) the MAMMOth poster with QR-code (not designed by me), (3) a promotional flyer that was placed in the local newspaper to promote the first edition of this exhibit.

A2 Mammoth - Poster QR

Component 1 – facial recognition – contains (1) the final print versions of the instructions (red glasses were placed on top of the laminated paper) (2) the final print version of the actual banner with the faces (3) a colour chart that was also printed on the canvas material of the banner to test the idea.

Component 2 – eye catcher posters (dutch only) – contains the two-sided posters with opinions of people about AI and AI bias (translations can be found in the mini-versions of the quotes in the component 5 – bulletin board folder). these posters were printed two sided and placed in poster stand. Positioned throughout the exhibition room to give a dynamic and enganging experience.

Component 3 – building a neural net – this folder only contains the Nl and EN instructions and statements that were used. The rest of the product consists of the wooden framework, sticks and wires (see Lucy’s pictures). this component was placed in the center of the room with the ‘starting point’ facing the door to encourage participation.

Component 4 – mini-podcast – this contains the podcast script (Nl and EN) and audio files, and podcast instructions. These were positioned next to component 1, since it elaborates on facial recognition and the associated bias as a case of AI bias.

Component 5 – this contains the statements from component 2 in a mini-version, with the translation underneath. These were placed on/around a bulletin board, alongside post-it notes, pens and thumbtacks. people were asked to share their opinion “at the picture of the megaphone” in the mini-podcast, hence also the A4 pdf of a pictogram of a megaphone. This was also placed on the bulletin board.
